Walking the bustling central Athens street of Mitropoleos, it would be easy to miss the entrance to the Magna Grecia hotel as it makes little external fanfare about its enviable location. A doorway leads up a set of steps into reception where you will likely be greeted by one of the friendly staff. Don't expect acres of shining marble on the floor or ultra-modern decoration to distract you here, as the Magna Grecia hotel is simple, chic and most importantly very, very Greek.

Anyone with a passing knowledge of Athens knows that any transport other than the Metro or your feet is nothing but a pain, so choosing a central hotel is essential if you plan to do the tourist thing. Well, you can't get much more central than the Athens Magna Grecia hotel. It's steps away from Plaka, the Acropolis, Ermou's shopping, Syntagma Square and all the museums surrounding the ancient sites. The fact you wake up and look out onto a picturesque church and city square reinforces your feeling of being in the centre of the action.
5 star hotels in Athens insider look from the Greek-advisor.com
Described as a boutique hotel, the Magna Grecia hotel perhaps doesn't take this tag entirely to heart, which in this case is for the best. It's small and personal certainly, as it has just ten rooms, but it's not modern and minimalist like so many other city boutiques. Here instead you'll feel like you're living in the home of a rich Greek uncle. High ceilings, huge doors, lovely bay windows and bright colour combinations are the order of the day, with each of the rooms taking a name rather than a number and shunning anything more technologically complex than a TV and Wi-Fi Internet.

The rooms take their names from Greek islands, with Samos and Mykonos being the pick of the ten, as these are located on the second floor and have a balcony with a truly wonderful view over the church courtyard and out to the Acropolis. This is especially attractive at night when the city and the Parthenon is lit up. The first floor rooms Kefalonia and Zakynthos are also attractive, as are the wooden floors and furnishings found throughout the hotel, all of which fits in well with the neoclassical building.

Climbing to the top floor brings you to the charming roof garden and restaurant. This large room has exposed beams on the ceiling, lots of natural light and a really friendly atmosphere, and again, that wonderful view. Breakfast and coffee in the afternoon is served here and guests are welcome to come up and relax later in the evening too.

If one phrase had to be used to describe the Magna Grecia hotel, it would be 'full of character'. From the massive rugs on the hallway floor to the pretty breakfast room, everything feels so personal, hence the impression you're staying in someone's home, which of course, it has been in the past. Rounding off your Athens living experience is the excellent service at the hotel. With just ten rooms, the staff will know your name and what you like to do, so expect to make good friends while you stay. If you want the feeling of a proper Athens visit, then you should consider selecting the Magna Grecia hotel.
