Kolonaki is the Chelsea of Athens, a suburb climbing up Lycabettus Hill and dotted with swanky restaurants, hopelessly trendy bars, designer shops and plenty of fashionable people. Its streets are often lined with trees and once you get high enough, pretty parks and woodland replace the buildings, hustle and bustle of the city centre. It's clear then why Kolonaki is home to the unique boutique hotel named Periscope.

The Athens Periscope hotel has to be one of the strangest names for a hotel you'll ever hear, a seemingly random word plucked from the dictionary with no connection to hotels or the area being instantly obvious. But for once, there is a very good reason for its odd name, as it really does have a periscope! On the roof, a camera is connected to monitors all over the hotel and controlled by a device exactly like a periscope control, located in the Lounge Bar on the ground floor. With this you can explore the entire city by panning and zooming the camera, getting close enough to the Acropolis to see the individual people there!

This wonderful device is not the only thing which will remind you of a submarine, as the hall and stairways will too. A giant measure depicting your height above sea-level stretches in-between the stairs, the walls are painted a dark, military grey and the massive floor numbers are in the traditional font found numbering the decks onboard ship. Sounds pretty nasty, right? Well, surprisingly it's not. A blue carpet calms the oppression and reminds one of the sea, while the low light level just makes everywhere dark anyway. However, everything changes once inside the rooms.

Periscope hotel has just 21 rooms, with four of them junior suites and one a penthouse suite, and each is so light and airy, you would be forgiven for thinking you'd just entered a completely different hotel. Soft, high quality bed linen drape over the large beds and the wooden floors add a considerably more homely feel than the more usual drab hotel carpets, while crisp white accessories give the rooms a modern, minimalist feel. Perhaps not one for the traditionalist, Periscope's rooms are also exercises in ergonomics and space-saving, for example the writing desk converts into a handy dressing table when needed.
