In these days of over-exposure, marketing hype and a desire to be seen as ‘different’ - often achieved by merely becoming a parody - we as consumers need to teach ourselves perspective. In terms of hotels, we don't really need the nonsense paraded in front of us as unique, as quite often all we're looking for is high quality whilst retaining value, a feeling of importance to the staff and most of all, a clean, comfortable room. Entering reception through the revolving doors leads you almost directly into the lounge bar, where the translucent furniture immediately catches your eye, as does the bar itself and the abundance of floral decoration. Strangely, there is no reception bar to be seen – no division between you and 'them'. Then, to your left a collection of antique style desks with chairs in front of them and a friendly staff member behind comes into view; this is where you check-in, in comfort and without a fuss.

The rooms are classically styled and well furnished, with soft linen on the large beds. Executive rooms, which can be single, double or triple and the Junior Suites are all spacious and airy with a small seating area and well-appointed bathroom. The Master Suite is considerably larger and has one of the finest bathrooms you'll see, with acres of marble, a large Jacuzzi bath and plenty of space. The two-level Penthouse Suite offers the pinnacle of luxury at the Stratos Vassilikos hotel. Each room is primarily a mixture of whites, creams and beiges, which adds to the feeling of size, plus the hotel offers non-smoking rooms. A further key attraction of the hotel is its ease of access for disabled guests, with plenty of ramps and large walkways if needed, features which were installed for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Business guests are an important factor for the hotel and their conference facilities are excellent, offering large rooms with plenty of natural light, connected by common seating areas to relax in during breaks. The restaurant on the ground level has a fountain in the centre and offers a la carte meals throughout the day. We mentioned value as being key in a modern hotel and the Stratos Vassilikos hotel offers plenty. For a start, wireless Internet access is free (something of a rarity in Athens), as is use of the gym, sauna and Hammam. There is even a traditional Greek barber who operates from a small room between 8am and 10am each day, ready to give you a proper shave or haircut! Again, this unusual service is offered free to guests.

If the Athens Stratos Vassilikos has any downsides, then it's the location. With no view other than the main road (but don't worry, the rooms are double-glazed) and a 10 minute walk to the Metro station for access to the city centre, it can't really be called central. Star rating's just doesn't matter when everything is as good as it is at the Stratos Vassilikos.

From the Eleftheros Venizelos International Airport:
