Standing stop Mount Lycabettus you're treated to a 360 degree panoramic view of the Athenian city sprawl right down to the coastline and out to the islands of the Saronic Gulf. It approaches 300 metres above sea level, is the highest point in the city and the pine forests which form its edge make a great walking spot. It's on the fringes of the pine forest where you'll find the St George Lycabettus hotel, its name taken from the tiny church which perches atop the mount's peak. Established in 1974, one could argue it shares equal landmark status as its mountainous protector.

In its thirty-year plus existence, the St George Lycabettus hotel has undergone many makeovers and upgrades, the most recent of which was just before the Athens Olympics in 2004. Since then, it has morphed into a boutique hotel which now benefits from one of the classiest bar/restaurants in the area and a beautiful and relaxing Spa. Located in the fashionable Athenian suburb of Kolonaki, which is filled with designer boutiques and chic cafes, it does require a bit of a trek up the hill to get there, but once you arrive you'll know it was worth the effort.

One thing becomes clear when you enter the St George Lycabettus hotel, and that is how several different decorative styles have been mixed to create this latest incarnation. Neoclassic furniture and colours adorn the reception, while in the rooms, modern furnishings, colour schemes and unusual ornamentation vie for your attention after the various paintings which adorn the corridor walls. Now, this may be a love or hate styling choice, but there will be no denying its impact.

Interestingly, not all the rooms at the St George Lycabettus hotel have the traditional rectangular layout. A corner room is just that, instead of a room designed with a right-angle here we have a collection of varying degree angles, giving a fresh take on something which rarely changes from hotel to hotel. Astounding views all over the city, equalled only by those from the top of the hill, can be seen from the comfort of your bed and make the selection of a Deluxe Acropolis Suite a highly recommended option. Other room types include Deluxe, Junior Suites and a choice of two exclusive and luxurious Presidential Suites.

Descending back down to the ground floor takes you to Frame, a new designer bar created by Greek architect Dimitris Tsigos, where cool furniture and simple colours mix with the varying sounds from the five resident Djs. Outside, Frame has a relaxing garden and bohemian style chillout area which is perfect in the evening. For a more relaxed experience, the Grand Balcon roof garden is the ideal destination. Breathtaking views befit its sixth floor setting and the menu matches it on terms of uniqueness. The Sensia Spa winds through tiny corridors and offers many treatments for your pleasure and is easily one of the best in the city.
