One of the newest luxury hotels on the island of Crete, the Domes of Elounda is currently in that undiscovered gem phase, where word of mouth is spreading but its name is still mentioned mainly by travel aficionados, who like nothing more than to lay claim to 'knowing' a hotel before it becomes widely appreciated. But is the Domes of Elounda worthy of this attention, especially when it shares the western part of the island with so many established names?
Luxury hotels Crete we know what you want to know
Undoubtably, yes. Traveling through the town of Elounda and out towards Mirabello Bay takes you along a picturesque coastal road, where the Domes of Elounda occupies an elevated position overlooking the waters. The whole approach and entrance to the hotel is reminiscent of Mykonos town and the excellent Cavo Tagoo, a comparison which is not only enviable, but also continues in the presentation and quality too.

Accommodation at the Domes of Elounda consists primarily of 80 suites, which are joined by eight private residences, three villas and a beautiful Royal Villa. The suites dot the hillside on which the hotel is built, each providing a wonderful view out to sea and over the island of Spinalonga, and each has been lovingly styled by a well-known Greek designer. It's the Open Plan Suite which represents the entry-level room type, however we suggest selecting the Premium One Bedroom Suite due to more space and a more preferable location. Inside, a comfortable and spacious living room leads to an equally spacious bedroom, where special mention must be made of the outstanding COCO-MAT mattresses and pillows you'll find adorning the bed. In the living room, an LCD TV, Satellite receiver and wired Internet take care of the modern amenities, with some comfortable chairs and sofas for relaxing.

However, it's outside where you'll really want to be relaxing. Selecting a suite with a private pool is highly recommended, however if you decide you would prefer a balcony rather than a terrace, then an open-air Jacuzzi is a popular option. We loved the terrace in our suite due to a sturdy wooden table and chairs offering a stunning view out to Spinalonga, plus the sunbeds by our pool were a constant distraction. Set back from the main hotel building, in the evenings these suites are quiet and peaceful, with only the sound of a cricket and the distant waves to break the silence.

From the domed ceilings, sprawling interiors, gorgeous grounds and a very inviting swimming pool, these represent the pinnacle of luxury at the hotel. Continuing in this fashion is the Milfey Spa, where many treatments are available in unique black and gold surroundings.

When it comes to dining, you have several choices at the Domes of Elounda. Breakfast is served inside the restaurant in the main building and is a delicious buffet, with the opportunity to sit at a table outside and enjoy the morning air and a view across the sea. Later, traditional Greek seafood dishes are served at 1910, or for a more varied menu, try Topos. The chef who looks after both these restaurants is credited as being the only Greek chef with a Michelin star.
Luxury hotels Crete insider look from the Greek-advisor.com
The balance of modern and traditional style in a hotel is often difficult to get right, but the Domes of Elounda truly has - managing to look like it belongs on the landscape, but also boasting a fresh, clean and stylish decor throughout the interiors. The downside to this brilliance can often be stuffy or overly hip staff, however this is not the case here, where friendly, welcoming staff show you around the hotel on arrival, assist with orientation and certainly during our stay, were never without a smile and a greeting. The act of pulling all these key factors together is not to be underestimated, and we predict true stardom for this fantastic Cretan hotel.
