The Elounda Bay Palace feels more intimate than the Elounda Beach - probably due to less emphasis on visual grandeur and more on the surrounding landscape. As these are both superb hotels, this clever juxtaposition of personalities ensures that no matter what you're looking for in terms of ambience at your hotel of choice, you'll be able to enjoy one or other of these great properties during your stay in Crete.

As with the Elounda Beach, room types are separated into different 'clubs' for easy reference, as there are twenty to choose from. Beginning with the Smart Club, these rooms and bungalows are located in and around the main building, so while privacy and seclusion may be reduced, sheer convenience is increased. If you decide the Smart Club is for you - and it's where the majority of the accommodation is to be found - the we do suggest taking a Superior Room with sea view at the minimum, as the garden or side sea view options simply don't do the spectacular location justice! However, our preferred Smart Club option are the Superior Bungalows. Although compact, they offer a great sea view and the use of a heated pool exclusively for use by guests of this room type.

Moving up to through the Prestige and Elite Club takes you to the Silver Club, where we loved the waterfront Luxury Junior Suites thanks to plenty of space, a shared pool and more stylish furnishings. The very height of luxury at the Elounda Bay Palace comes with a stay on one of the Exclusive Club's four suites. These huge multi-bedroom suites benefit from their own pools, Jacuzzi and a wonderful view from their elevated position.

When deciding to eat at the Elounda Bay Palace, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to waterfront restaurants. If dining by the shore is to be done properly, the the Thalassa Waterfront should be your initial choice, where they serve both Greek and international dishes, but the delightful Ariadne traditional taverna should be next on your list. For more exotic fare, there is the Blue Lagoon Polynesian restaurant and sushi bar which has the option of dining out on a deck or under the starlight ceiling inside.

Guests at the Elounda Bay Palace can take advantage of the Elounda Beach's excellent Thalaspa Chenot Spa, or simply relax on one of the very best private beaches in Crete, take a dip in one of the two pools or try some the water sports. While it may not be as overtly flash as the Elounda Beach, this more relaxed approach to luxury has given the Elounda Bay Palace a character all of its own, and one which is very welcoming.
