As excellent as the larger resorts are, for some people, only the quiet intimacy offered by a small, boutique hotel will do and if you count yourself among that number, the Elounda Gulf Villas is certain to please. Hopping into a golf cart and touring the winding pathways circling the hotel reveals cascading trees, splashes of colour from bougainvillea and other blooming shrubs and very occasionally, another guest. Stopping the cart early to continue by foot towards Argonauts Bar lets you enjoy the silence, broken only by nearby birdsong. If there had been a seat nearby, chances are we would have sat there for the rest of the day simply enjoying the peace.

Argonauts Bar overlooks the hotel's main infinity pool and is open day and night - when it's transformed by the seductive lighting - for drinks and cocktails and is complimented by two restaurants. The Argo is lit by candles at night, fighting the bar for title of 'most romantic', and serves lighter meals and breakfast in the mornings, while Daphni is a gourmet restaurant with a a la carte menu which can even be privately booked if you wish to commemorate a special occasion or simply spoil yourself one evening.

In case it isn't clear yet, the Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites is perfectly suited to couples who want to spend time together in stylish, classy surroundings. Decor is a combination of woods, marble, stone and classic furnishings; the hotel thankfully shunning the modern minimalist look which while popular, would have robbed it of much of the charm and friendliness it exudes. Thanks to its small size, the service is more personal and friendly, with everyone from the manager to the maid likely to know you by name rather than room number. There is also very little that will be too much trouble, with the team dedicated to making your stay the best you've ever experienced.

At only 28 rooms, you may be thinking your decision on which room to stay in will be easy, but think again! There are ten suites and 18 villas at the Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites and each is uniquely styled and laid-out, so if you're returning for another stay and have a different room it will actually feel different rather than being the same thing in another part of the hotel. The one bedroom Luxury Senior Suite is the hotel's simplest accommodation, but we suggest starting with the Elounda, Aegean and Mediterranean Villas as you'll love the size of the rooms - at 120 square meters minimum, they are larger than some of the top level accommodation found elsewhere! As attractive as they are, we have to recommend you seriously consider one of the Superior Spa, Executive Spa or Presidential Spa Villas if you're looking to spoil yourself, as each comes with a private infinity pool, sauna, hammam and gym.

We were particularly charmed by two rooms. The Pandora Suite with its three levels is the first. Upon entering, a few steps lead down to the living room and then out on to the veranda, or to your right, some lead up to the bedroom and up again to the bathroom, creating a spacious yet compact abode that was simply delightful. The Ariadne Presidential Spa Villa is the second, a stunning home-from-home remembered for the spiral staircase, the huge marble bathroom and the traditional beauty of the three master bedrooms. Of course, if you're interested in a self-contained super-luxurious stay at the Elounda Gulf Villas, the the Royal Spa Villa is certainly for you. At 350 square meters and with four master bedrooms, a heated infinity pool, private gym and a private entrance, you need never see another soul if you don't want too.
