As you return to your room, along the slightly inclined pathways, the view across the Mirabello Bay is beautiful, but the best is yet to come. If you have chosen to stay in the main building - split into Rooms, Suites, Superior Suites and Two-Bedroom Superior Suites - then no matter which room-type you've selected you will be treated to that same sea view! The atmosphere in all the rooms is one of classic wealth, where traditional rugs and wooden furnishings appear at home with the neutral wall colors. Looking outside is a different affair, as the green gardens and the deep blue sea await.

The Bungalows are separated into five categories ranging from the Deluxe Bungalows, each with private pool, to the three bedroom Bungalow Suite, making it suitable for up to seven adults. Again, traditional style is the order of the day, with muted tones complimented by bright tapestry-look rugs and polished wooden furniture. Finally, the Minoan Royalty suites are up to 140 square meters in size and again come with a private pool, along with more modern styling cues alongside the Cretan wooden, metal and ceramic fittings.

We particularly liked the Superior Bungalows, especially when they are slightly further away from the main building and the restaurants, as they offer far more secluded positioning while providing plenty of space for two people. The Elounda Mare Hotel is not a stark, super-modern hotel and has instead stayed true to its Cretan heritage, making it perfect for those who want their stay to be as island-like as possible, and it has several eye-catching characteristics including the polished wooden flooring. This said, you'll still find an Internet connection, a DVD player and an 'Airbath' tub in the vast majority of the rooms too.

Within the grounds and the main building of the Elounda Mare you'll find three restaurants and the Karavia Bar. The Deck is where you'll partake of breakfast and an a la carte dinner, while the seafront Yacht Club is open for dinner and lunch, both a la carte style. Finally the Old Mill is reserved for drinks during the day and is then transformed into the hotel's poshest restaurant at night - and one which you'll have no problem dressing up for as the food is excellent.

The Elounda Mare Hotel has a variety of boutique shops, a chapel and a large swimming pool within its grounds, plus water sports down by the beach, however if you're wanting something more then a short journey to the hotel's sister property, the Porto Elounda, will be required. Here you'll find both the breathtaking Six Senses Spa and a 9-hole Golf course. Rather than being a disadvantage, we liked the fact that after using these two great facilities, we retreated to a far quieter hotel afterwards.
