Traditional colours and furniture give the rooms a very Cretan feel here, and as modern styling has yet to take a hold this should be viewed as the place to stay for those who dislike the fashionable minimalist style so prevalent in many deluxe hotels. The Bungalows and Exclusive Suites come with a private swimming pool, however seeing as the hotel is located on the wrong side of the road for a waterfront location, your sea view will be observed from a distance.

Not to worry though, as this is where the Imperial Wing comes in. Stroll through reception and out into the grounds - where a huge swimming pool dominates your view, broken only by palm trees and sunbeds - and then up and over the curving bridge. The Imperial Wing was built in 2008 and is, essentially, a different hotel. Walking towards the sea, you're flanked by eye-level lagoons below the first set of rooms, before appearing in a courtyard leading down to the beach. A glazed restaurant overlooking the sandy beach is where breakfast for guests of the Imperial Wing is served, although even if you stay in the main building you can enjoy the long stretch of beach.

There are just 58 rooms here, and are a completely different style to the ones found in the main building. Simple yet stylish furnishings stand on hardwood floors, crisp white sheets benefit from flashes of bright colours found on bedspreads and other soft furnishings, while the floor-to-ceiling French windows let in so much Cretan sunlight, you cannot help but feel summery as soon as you step through the door. Needless to say, if you prefer your hotel to look and feel modern with a funky twist, then choose the Imperial Wing at the Minoa Palace hotel.
