When you arrive at the Porto Elounda De Luxe Resort, you'll find a gate halts your progress and to gain entrance, you must announce your arrival to a friendly doorman, who subsequently remotely opens said gate. We mention this as not only does this signify the seclusion the Porto Elounda Resort offers, but also represents the moment you leave the world behind and enter somewhere altogether better.

Once inside your room, you'll notice they're an exercise in chic, modern style, shunning the temptation to add trinkets and useless pieces of modern art all in the name of 'fashion', something other hotels would do well to observe. Although there are many room types - ranging from the simple suites with balconies to the large two-bedroom suites with private pool - your choice is simplified by each offering a view of the sea. Our personal recommendation is to select the Porto Deluxe room with a private pool as although the shared pool room is attractive, there is nothing like having that pool all to yourself! If you are traveling as a family, the two-bedroom suites are also fantastic.

If you examine the list of room types the Porto Elounda De Luxe Resort offers it will become clear that the hotel is very welcoming to families, a point re-enforced by the Children's Ark, a club for the little ones open six days per week and full of varied activities to keep your children occupied and for you to really relax. Although common in other European holiday destinations, a facility of this size and creativity is unusual in Greece, but this surely leads the way for the future.

Surrounding the hotel are acres of lush gardens and walking around them is an event in itself, as there is a bewildering maze of paths which lead to restaurants, boutique shops, the beach or just around the sprawling hotel itself. Strolling around often reveals something new everytime, such as emerging from a passage way and being confronted by a small, picturesque church, where the Porto Elounda Resort often hosts a wedding. Closer to the centre of the grounds sees you surrounded by the green of the 9-hole golf course, reputed to be a challenge for beginner and experienced player alike.

When staying at a hotel which exceeds expectations no matter how dizzyingly high they may be, it can be difficult to select a stand out feature, but it's surprisingly easy at the Porto Elounda Resort thanks to the presence of a Six Senses spa. Seasoned travelers may recognise the name from trips to the Far East, and this was the first incarnation of the Six Senses in Europe. Although a spa is hardly unique for a deluxe hotel, it's rarely anything more than three or four treatment rooms, a small pool and a gym. Not so with the Porto Elounda's Six Senses, which is 2,200 square meters of soothing hideaway. Tall ceilings and soft colours are complimented by several eye-catching works of art, while ever-present streams of water prepare you for your chosen treatment. It won't come as a surprise to learn that this Six Senses spa has won several prestigious awards.

You choice of four restaurants and two bars exist for your dining and refreshment, and special mention should be made of Elies - Greek for olives - where delicious Cretan dishes are served a la carte for lunch and dinner. There is a beach bar and a lobby bar named Kirki. The Porto Elounda's sister hotel, the Elounda Mare, is a few moments away and as a guest you are free to visit their selection of restaurants too, giving plenty of variety no matter how long your stay is. Ultimately though, your stay will come to an end and perhaps the only disappointing thing about those automatic gates at the front entrance, is their inability to stop you leaving.
