Is it possible to find a hotel which combines both attentive service and modern, stylish decor, without any pretensions? Sure, one can find plenty which have all of these things, but where does the international traveler stay when fawning, forelock-tugging staff are at the top of the list of undesirables? One such hotel is the Saint Nicolas Bay, named after the pretty little town which it borders, where an astonishing attention to detail has created one of the best hotels on the island of Crete.
Luxury hotels Crete we know what you want to know
A mistake made by many deluxe hotels is to confuse servility with good service, or worse, mistakenly act with an air of obsequiousness when they were trying for eagerness to please. This is mainly borne from inexperience, something you won't find at the St Nicolas Bay. The manager has some 25 years experience in the industry and a huge percentage of his staff have been at the hotel for a similar amount of time, and those which haven't have worked alongside him previously. This low turnover of staff and the long-term building of a team of expert professionals has created a rather unique atmosphere - one of being in good hands matched with a genuine willingness to help from the staff, with the call of duty being exceeded behind the scenes on a daily basis.

We find it telling that the above makes the Saint Nicolas Bay standout from the crowd, and anyone keen to find a hotel where traditional service values are upheld will be certain to return to the St Nicolas Bay time and time again. There is however, considerably more to the hotel than just good service. On arrival you'll announce yourselves at the reception desk, but then you'll walk across the courtyard to another building where you'll sit, fill in arrival papers and talk to guest relations, who'll then show you to your room. This civilised and very calming arrival procedure is a far cry from the hectic and uncomfortable check-in process found in some other, far larger, hotels.

Pathways shaded by trees and shrubs lead you around the grounds, providing a wonderful fragrance in the late afternoon and early evening, while the beachfront location ensures total peace and quiet, away from any main roads or busy public beaches. All 107 rooms are facing the sea, which itself is mere moments away no matter which type you choose, and as the owner is an architect, you'll find many unique pieces of furniture and art both in your room and in the public spaces. Colour schemes are mainly bright, clean creams and whites, with soft furnishings providing flashes of colour. Tiled or hardwood floors compliment the modern wooden furniture and more traditional stone walls outside remind you that the St Nicolas Bay is at heart, a traditional property.

There are also plenty of dining opportunities at the hotel too, however special mention must go to The Greek Kafenion. Easily mistaken for a Cretan taverna in a tiny seafront village, you'll sit at white tables and chairs, the former draped in blue tablecloths, in the shadow of the tiny Agios Nicolaos church and gaze out to sea. Serving a variety of seafood and Cretan specialities, this is one restaurant where a return visit is a must. Elsewhere in the grounds you'll find Labyrinthos, serving international cuisine in the evenings, The Minotaure poolside Mediterranean restaurant and several chic bars.

Additionally, there is the Poseidon Spa where one can partake in a variety of wellness and beauty treatments, all performed with excellent Elemis products, plus steam rooms, an indoor pool, fitness centre and hydrotherapy. If you're planning a visit to the Spa, makes sure you request their rooftop treatment room, which has an unparalleled view across the bay. The Saint Nicolas Bay has three outdoor swimming pools and a water sports centre by the beach. During your walks around the grounds, you'll also come across the Argonautis Art Gallery, where many pieces by local and national artists are displayed. Finally, the convenient location of the hotel means it's a 20-minute stroll into the town, or a short drive to the nearby town of Elounda too.
