Believe it or not, you can visit Mykonos and enjoy a stay on this beautiful Greek island without being a part of the 'scene' if you don't want to. However, because Mykonos is well-known for its glitzy nightlife, party beaches and generally very chic and 'in' clientele, many assume, or are mislead into thinking, that every hotel is at the centre of the action. This being an honest overview of the Mykonos San Marco hotel, it's fair to say it's not a central hotel and if you want to get to downtown you have three options; an four kilometer stroll, hire a car or take advantage of the hotel's mini bus. But, one man's drawback is one man's benefit, as the San Marco is a lovely secluded retreat.
Luxury Mykonos hotels unbiased reviews from the Greek-advisor.com
Situated off the main coast road and adjacent to a rocky bay where the adventurous can reach some of the clearest water you'll see, the San Marco hotel resembles a traditional estate with its central square and surrounding gardens. Unusually for Mykonos, it's far from arid and the palms, grasses, bougainvillea and other splashes of natural colour give it a very different feel from other hotels. Of course, the buildings themselves are blue and white and surround a courtyard where the classic gazebo is perfect for sheltering from the midday sun. When the Mykonos San Marco hotel was conceived, it was not by a consortium of hoteliers out for maximum profit, but by someone who wanted to offer value for money and comfort, thus the inside is a little different to other similar properties.
5 star hotels in Mykonos online rates from the Greek-advisor.com
The San Marco has a total of 85 rooms, with just 19 of them being the standard Classic Mykonian classification, leaving the others free to be more spacious and of a higher standard – it's by no means a 'pack 'em in' style hotel! The rooms are bright and feature traditional decoration, some with wooden ceilings, split levels and in the case of the honeymoon suites, giant four poster beds and light, airy blue tones to create both a romantic and relaxing ambience. If your room is on a lower level, you may be lucky and have a wonderful terrace with its own overflowing garden, where colourful flowers cascade and perfectly frame an equally beautiful sea view – it really is perfect in the late afternoon!

Inside the main hotel building, the large reception leads out to an enormous pool with a pretty seating area ideal for an early cocktail. As anyone wanting a quick swim will have to make a little more effort than is healthy on a holiday to get to the sea, the pool is a God-send, with its free-form design and plentiful sun loungers surrounding it. In the evening, hidden away behind the pool, through a door or two and out into an isolated, tree-covered, stone floored square are a collection of tables and chairs where you're encouraged to partake in Ouzo, one of the more famed Greek drinks. Elsewhere, Pythari Restaurant ensures early morning hunger pangs are taken care of with a hearty breakfast and the Veranda Restaurant serves Mediterranean fusion cuisine for dinner.

Service is what one would call flexible, as the staff go out of their way to accommodate personal taste instead of conforming to a particular service 'style', hence a stay at Mykonos San Marco hotel should make you feel perfectly at home. Providing you're not expecting to be able to step outside your door and be in the middle of Mykonos Town, and you enjoy something a little more traditional, then the San Marco comes highly recommended.
