The little streets around the town of Oia on Santorini are usually bustling with life, with people enjoying a drink in the many cafes or selecting items of jewelry or clothing from the many boutique shops. But as you move through the town, past the restaurants and out towards the cliff edge, Oia takes a turn. Gone are the crowds, silence falls and suddenly time could have been reversed by a hundred years as the traditional houses spring up and a complete lack or cars or motorcycles becomes evident. You can actually stop, listen and hear nothing aside from birdsong and the sound of the sea.

It is here, outside of Oia town where you'll find the Fanari Villas, a collection of cave-style rooms on the cliff edge overlooking the Aegean sea, Thirassia islet and the caldera itself. This hallowed location is also perfect for observing the wonderful Santorini sunsets without the crowds. Walk down winding stairs and along tiny paths and you'll eventually come to the Fanari Villas reception, where your initial greeting will be representative of the service you should expect during your stay: warm, friendly and professional. Little will be too much trouble here from the highly praised staff.

The Fanari Villas has a total of nineteen rooms, comprising of twelve suites and seven apartments. Inside, the atmosphere is one of home; with traditional but stylish furniture and cosy cushions and bed linen surrounded with nautical trinkets and antique lights. The suites still capture that wonderful Santorini cave room feel but does away with cold, modern minimalism, favouring warmth and character instead. The suites are larger and perhaps a little more luxurious, however the Fanari Villas is not about taking pictures of how flash your room is, it's about what's outside your window. Our personal favourite was number 12, a pretty room which remains private thanks to a door off of a private stone patio separating you from the rest of the hotel. Built in the shadow of the old church, there was a time when this part of the hotel was connected to it, so it has a real sense of history about it.

If you decide to spend your day at the hotel, you can enjoy their unusual pool where part leads inside its own cave, take a sauna, relax on one of the many sun loungers scattered around the pool area or refresh yourself with a drink or snack from the pool bar. There is also the Sun Spirit bar above the pool area which gives fabulous views of the sunset and also the Fanari restaurant for a meal after the sun has gone down. Exploring Oia is easy and the town is moments away by foot, a journey which takes you past the famous white and blue windmills.
