Staying along the cliffs of Santorini brings a unique view of the caldera and stunning open sea vistas, however it also brings with it a lot of steps. For some this may not be a problem, but anyone who doesn't 'do' so many steps and still wants to see Santorini must find somewhere else to stay, which could mean a compromise regarding quality. Located in Megalahori, a quiet village around 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the island capital of Fira, the Vedema hotel & Resort is an amazing, self-contained luxury hotel contained inside its own walled border – almost like a little castle. The Santorini Vedema hotel was formally a winery dating back to the 15th century and the old, traditional white buildings have been adapted and finely crafted into 45 beautiful suites which make up the Vedema hotel today. Of course, the advantage of being closed off from everyone else is the almost total privacy the Vedema resort offers; however anyone wanting to explore the island would be advised to hire a car.

The Suites are separated into five categories, plus one Presidential Suite. Unusually for Santorini – and certainly a key difference between staying here and in Oia – is the size of the suites inside, even the smallest Dorian Suites are a minimum of 50 square meters! The decor is extremely modern, even though much of the furniture is of the more traditional wooden variety and we should warn you, some of the Dorian, Athenian and Ionian suites have truly eye-popping colour schemes which will be love-or-hate, so make sure you check the pictures before making up your mind. That being said, the cool, airy colours used in the Corinthian and Aegean Residences are far more subtly and in keeping with the island's ethos.

With the Santorini Vedema labeled as a resort, it should come as no surprise you can find everything you need on site. There is a choice of seven bars and restaurants to choose from, all of which are superb, however the pick of the bunch has to be the Vinsanto Restaurant and Lounge and the Canava Wine Bar. Both occupy a cave, as used by the winery all those years ago, carved from the black, volcanic rock so commonly seen on Santorini, offering a totally unique atmosphere for the wine tasting ceremonies and the fresh menu. Similar cave-rooms house the excellent spa too.

Aside from the fewer steps at the Santorini Vedema hotel & Resort, guests also get to enjoy the hotel's own private black sand beach complete with sun loungers, umbrellas and a little beach bar, a very well-equipped gym, free mountain bike rental for local exploration and a variety of boat tours to the volcano and nearby islands.
