Mykonos Things to do

Mykonos Must-See's

The island is not exactly brimming with museums and tends to present a more hands-on cultural experience than gazing at treasures behind glass.  Yes there’s a folklore museum and a maritime one too, but anyone wanting to see some proper Greek history would be best advised to take a trip to nearby Delos, the legendary birthplace of Apollo.  A tiny 5km wide, uninhabited Delos is almost entirely covered by archaeological discoveries.  Houses, temples, stadiums and burial grounds, all centuries old, can be seen on this fascinating island.

Mykonos Clubs & Bars

Some may argue that the only must-see’s on Mykonos are the sunsets and the bodies of your fellow visitors, but to that honest and straight-to-the-point list, we should add the windmills, the Panagia Paraportiani church and the Tria Pigadia wells, where legend has it a virgin who drinks from each well is assured of finding a husband.  Petros and his other Pelican pals have already been recommended, but a reminder was due.

As most of these must-sees are in Mykonos town, one may as well take in some of the nightlife too.  In the same way that a different beach could be visited each day of your stay, a different bar, club, restaurant and café could too.  Plentiful and varied, there is, quite literally, something for everyone on Mykonos.

Notable names include the famed Paradise Club, where most of the big name DJ’s play, Kastro in Little Venice is a perfect location for watching the sunset before moving on to a club where Le Caprice is a little more laid back but equally as chic.  Argo and The Anchor attract anyone who wants classic rock and some blues.  Thought that these sounded to tame and perhaps a little too straight?  Pierro’s is a busy gay bar, Ikaros is well known for its drag acts and the Porto Bar and Manto Bar are also worth a look.  The Art Café has an all-gay staff and the Magic Gardens is a secluded all-gay restaurant.

As if it needed it, Mykonos’s dedication to fun and frolics can be underlined by the presence of Water Mania, a large water park near Elia beach, which features massive slides, pools and rides.  Does the tiny island need a 60,000 square meter water park?  If it were anywhere else except Mykonos we would probably say no, but here it just seems to fit.

Mykonos Restaurants

All this activity may make you wonder how you will find the time to sleep let alone eat!  Our suggestion is to forego a little sleep, as there are some excellent restaurants to be tried.  As with most of the island, expect to pay top price for food and drinks, but as long as you choose the right places, the quality will be right up there too.

For the epitome of Mykonian gastronomy visit Philippi in Mykonos town.  A man who has seen Mykonos evolve since the 60s, Philippe Kontizas runs one of the most atmospheric and beautiful restaurants in town.  Built in the courtyard of a former mansion/hotel run by his mother, one can enjoy many Greek dishes along with some choice French ones, all washed down with a wine from his impressive wine list.  A more romantic setting you will not find.  Sea Satin Market, Maria’s Garden and El Greco also come highly recommended.
