Arriving on Santorini
Much like other volcanic locations, Santorini can look rather otherworldy. Deep reds and blacks dominate the colour of the jagged rocks and cliffs; graphite can be found lending a unique ambience to hotels and restaurants and the only thing that seems to grow are the myriad vines that go towards creating Santorini’s varied wines.
Travel to the island can be via plane or boat. The tiny airport is ex-military and although not exactly state of the art, it’s a typically quaint island airport. Arrival by boat at one of the ports will almost always precede a journey up the winding roads that entwine the cliff face, where the magnificent views wipe your memory of the port’s industrial feel.
Keen island explorers will benefit from hiring a car, as taxis can be expensive and infrequent if you are off the main drag. The road network is small and simple to navigate, giving no problems for a reasonably confident driver. If a car seems to ordinary for this extraordinary island and a moped a good way to spend your break with a break (an arm, leg or whatever), then the fashion is to hire an ATV – those four-wheel all terrain bikes, also known as Quads – giving you the freedom and open-air experience of a motorcycle without the fear of falling off. |
